Episode 54: 91% went Quiet. IM STILL HERE! | Why I Refuse to Quit
Ninety-one percent went quiet. I’M STILL HERE!
Welcome to Episode Fifty-Four of the NorthAmericanDarrell Podcast!
In Episode Fifty-Three, we wrapped up my European adventure: three trips, twenty-four Wizz Air flights, seven Eurail travel days, and a wall map that needed MORE PINS! If you missed that finale, go back and catch it after this one.
Today, I’m not taking you to another country. I’m taking you inside my head. Because I’ve been wrestling with something I never expected to bring into retirement.
Numbers. Views. Downloads. Subscribers. Website traffic.
You spend hours creating something, hit publish, and then what? You check the numbers. Check them again. And suddenly, something that was supposed to be fun starts feeling like a performance review!
WAIT A MINUTE! I RETIRED TO GET AWAY FROM PERFORMANCE REVIEWS!
When I started NorthAmericanDarrell, I made myself a promise. This would be a hobby. A fun way to document my travels, my early retirement, and whatever ridiculous adventure came next.
Not another career. Not another boss. And definitely not another deadline hanging over my head!
But I’m human. I want to see growth. I want people to discover what I make. When an episode barely moves, yes, I get discouraged.
So here’s the sentence I keep coming back to.
I WANT GROWTH, BUT I REFUSE TO LET THE NUMBERS STEAL MY ENJOYMENT!
That’s the whole point of this episode. The ninety-one percent line is my way of talking about creators who lose momentum and go quiet. It isn’t a verified failure rate. But the trap behind it feels very real.
First you love creating. Then you start measuring. Then you start comparing. And one day, you let a little number on a screen decide whether the whole thing was worth doing.
NOT ME. At least, not if I can help it.
Because when I stop staring at what hasn’t happened, I see what I HAVE done.
Fifty-four podcast episodes. More than two hundred and twenty blog posts. More than nineteen hundred YouTube videos. And website activity from forty-three countries!
FIFTY-FOUR EPISODES! That’s fifty-four times I didn’t stop at an idea. I followed through!
Am I a famous YouTuber? NOPE! Am I making a fortune from podcasting? NOT EVEN CLOSE!
Those are not commercial success numbers. They’re personal milestones. Each one means I created something, learned something, or captured a memory that otherwise might have disappeared.
And if you’ve ever wondered why I share so much of my life online in the first place, look up Episode Twenty-Five: Why I Share My Life Online. That’s the beginning of this conversation. This episode is about keeping that original spirit alive.
And here’s a little snapshot from three weeks before this episode. My month-to-date website views showed five hundred and sixty-three from the United States, two hundred and ninety-one from the United Kingdom, eighty-four from Mexico, and fifty-two from China.
Canada had nine. India had three. And Morocco, Bhutan, Uzbekistan, and Thailand added six more combined.
That’s one thousand and eight website views in the snapshot! Not a thousand unique people. Not a thousand podcast listeners. Website views. I’m keeping the numbers in perspective.
Still, it’s interesting to see my little travel project showing activity around the world. I can appreciate that without turning it into a scoreboard for my self-worth.
The hardest part of creating isn’t always making the next video or recording the next podcast. Sometimes it’s staying excited when the response is quieter than you hoped.
And that is exactly where I refuse to let discouragement win.
Some episodes will get attention. Others won’t. Some blogs might help somebody plan a trip. Others might only become a memory for me to revisit years from now.
And you know what? That’s enough.
I’ll keep improving. I’ll keep experimenting. I’ll keep telling the stories. But I will not turn early retirement into a job I never applied for!
Growth is something I hope for. ENJOYMENT is something I refuse to give up.
If NorthAmericanDarrell becomes something bigger someday, fantastic. If it stays a collection of adventures, stories, and memories from my life, that’s fantastic too.
I don’t want to quit. I don’t want to feel discouraged. I DO want to see growth.
BUT I PROMISED MYSELF THIS WAS JUST A HOBBY!
So here’s my real milestone. Waking up tomorrow and still wanting to create something. Another story. Another adventure. Another reason to get out there and live!
NINETY-ONE PERCENT WENT QUIET! I’M STILL HERE!
IT’S JUST A HOBBY! RELAX! ENJOY THE PROCESS!
