📖 Episode 50 — Oktoberfest 2025! | Munich, Germany, Beer Tents & Early Retirement Adventures

CHAPTER 1 — FIFTY EPISODES! LET’S GO TO OKTOBERFEST!

That’s right, everybody!

Today, we’re heading to Munich, Germany, for one of the BIGGEST PARTIES ON THE PLANET!

OKTOBERFEST 2025!

This was one of my main goals when I purchased my Wizz Air All You Can Fly Pass.

For around five hundred dollars, I could access discounted flights throughout Europe, paying roughly ten euros per eligible flight.

My adventure brought me to Prague, Czech Republic.

And what a beautiful city Prague turned out to be!

Historic architecture, charming streets, fantastic beer, and an incredible atmosphere!

Prague was the perfect place to begin my European beer adventures.

But Prague deserves a podcast of its own!

Today, we’re heading to MUNICH!

Using my Eurail Pass, I made the roughly six-hour train journey from Prague, covering approximately 265 miles.

OKTOBERFEST OPENING WEEKEND!

But first, I needed somewhere to sleep.

And hotel prices during Oktoberfest?

Let’s just say they weren’t exactly early-retirement friendly!

Instead, I found a company that traveled between major events, transporting tents and camping equipment.

They’d set up an enormous temporary campground!

Rows and rows of tents, international travelers, and even an Oktoberfest party tent right on the property!

Accommodation choices included communal tents with up to eight people or a private tent.

Eight people sharing a tent after drinking enormous German beers?

I’ve survived enough hostel snoring championships!

I booked a single tent for two nights.

The campground was conveniently located near a metro station, making it easy to reach Munich and the festival.

I arrived Sunday, September twenty-first.

Rather than rush into the crowds, I settled in, relaxed, and prepared for an entire day at Oktoberfest on Monday.

After all, the beer wasn’t going anywhere!

CHAPTER 2 — WELCOME TO THE BIGGEST PARTY I’VE EVER ATTENDED!

Monday morning!

Time to explore!

I took the metro into Munich and walked around downtown.

And WOW!

The entire city was celebrating!

Outdoor patios were overflowing, restaurants were packed, and people were everywhere!

The men were wearing traditional Bavarian lederhosen, those leather shorts with suspenders.

And the women?

Beautiful traditional dirndl dresses!

Let’s just say some of those dresses showed a generous amount of cleavage!

Suddenly, people-watching had become one of my favorite tourist attractions!

But seriously, seeing everyone dressed up made the experience even more memorable.

Then I headed toward the Oktoberfest grounds.

HOLY SMOKES!

Imagine the biggest county fair you’ve ever attended.

Now multiply it by TEN!

Massive amusement rides, flashing lights, food stands, music, and enormous crowds!

The midway seemed to go on forever!

And then there were the beer tents!

I made my way into the legendary Löwenbräu tent.

Now, calling this thing a tent is ridiculous!

It has approximately eighty-five hundred seats inside, plus another twenty-seven hundred outside!

That’s more than ELEVEN THOUSAND seats!

AND THE BIGGEST PARTY I’VE EVER ATTENDED!

Thousands of people singing, raising giant beer mugs, standing on benches, and celebrating together!

The music was incredible!

The atmosphere was electric!

People from different countries, different backgrounds, and different languages all singing together!

I couldn’t understand half the words, but that wasn’t stopping anybody!

Seeing that enormous crowd singing together is something I’ll never forget!

CHAPTER 3 — GIANT BEERS, PRETZELS & SIX MILLION PARTYGOERS!

Of course, we need to talk about the beer!

In 2025, a one-liter beer at Löwenbräu cost fifteen euros and forty cents.

A FULL LITER!

Two beers?

Thirty euros and eighty cents!

Suddenly, my budget spreadsheet was starting to look a little nervous!

And you can’t visit Oktoberfest without a giant Bavarian pretzel!

I enjoyed a couple of those enormous beers, grabbed a pretzel, and headed back into the midway.

More food stands, carnival treats, enormous rides, and people everywhere!

I sampled a few fairground favorites and kept exploring.

Oktoberfest welcomed approximately SIX AND A HALF MILLION visitors in 2025!

SIX AND A HALF MILLION!

And after experiencing those crowds, I believed every single one of them!

But here’s something interesting.

I’d spent years wanting to experience Oktoberfest.

I’d planned my European travels around it.

I’d purchased my Wizz Air pass, arranged my Eurail journey, and booked my little campground.

And after one incredible day?

I’D HAD ENOUGH!

Not because I didn’t enjoy it.

I absolutely LOVED it!

But the crowds, music, food, and nonstop excitement were overwhelming!

I’d accomplished exactly what I came to Munich to do.

Sometimes one extraordinary experience is enough!

I returned to the campground Monday night, crawled into my private tent, and enjoyed my second night’s accommodation.

The following morning, I packed up and checked out.

Both nights used.

Mission accomplished!

CHAPTER 4 — FREEDOM, SLOW TRAVEL & FIFTY EPISODES!

And that brings me to something I love about slow travel.

Freedom!

Freedom to explore, freedom to change plans, and freedom to move on whenever you’re ready.

I didn’t need another day of Oktoberfest just because I was already there, and I could pivot easily.

I’d experienced something extraordinary and made another incredible travel memory.

And speaking of incredible…

Next stop?

SWITZERLAND!

I’d be heading into the Swiss Alps for an unforgettable railway adventure!

But that’s the story for Episode FIFTY-ONE!
