The one on the right! LOL
I have been on a lot of amazing adventures in my life, but this was at the TOP!
This way back in 2021 during a six-week trip to Thailand. I was so stoked to review the pictures again and reminded myself why I wanted to share some of these adventures on the website.
This is the Green Elephant sanctuary in Pucket, Thailand. Elephants are exploited around the world for their tusks and to make money like the shitty circus! This place helps!
Sanctuaries provide Elephants with a safe place where and are treated ethically. In this case, I would say they are even spoiled. Twice a day, tourists like me, come through to feed, and mud bath them to help protect their skin from the sun while the entrance fee provides them a good home.
The workers are all assigned an elephant to care for and live on-site with their families. Abuse is not tolerated as we were told a worker was fired for striking an elephant in the past.
If you do not click the sanctuary hyperlink, I cut and paste below how the day went:
1. We were dropped off at the sanctuary and shown the elephant’s rooms.
2. The trainer spoke in English explaining the abuse they face if not rescued.
3. We then walked to the front of the building and the elephants pranced out, one by one, knowing it was lunch and bath time. One elephant grazed me on the way which was scary as we were told not to make quick movements to scare them.
4. We were handed a bucket of vegetables, and the elephant would take them right out of our hands by their snout. They would curl their snout, open up, and gonzo, over and over. The video below is hilarious as they got to town one after the other.
5. There is a stat on how much they eat and shit, but I will leave that one up to you.
6. Once fed, the elephants walked into the water, and we followed them spreading mud all over their bodies with our hands. It was amazing to feel the texture of their skin!
7. Once we had all of the elephants full of mud, we were handed push brooms to spread the mud all over their bodies which appeared to relax the elephants like a belly rub.
8. Once that was done, we were given buckets to splash the mud off their massive body. It was a ton of work, but we all enjoyed it.
9. The elephants then literally walked into a massive elephant overhead sprinkler just like walking through a car wash. We continued to wash the mud off of them until they were clean.
10. Once clean, they walked back to their rooms preparing for the next group.
Here is a cut/paste from the website and some pictures and videos I took that day.
Elephant Sanctuary: Experience elephants in a whole new way.
Elephants belong to Thailand as well as the sea, good food, and fascinating culture. For centuries, elephants have been seen as holy in Thailand. Today elephant figures are still put in front of many buildings and sold as motifs on clothing or souvenirs. However, the number of elephants in Thailand is diminishing. For this reason, it is crucial to protect not only the wise giants but also their natural habitat. An Elephant sanctuary is the right address! Visit us and be impressed by the huge animals. Experience the very special atmosphere in our camp yourself!
Experience elephants in the elephant sanctuary
In the Elephant sanctuary, you can experience elephants most naturally. In their natural environment, where they are free and simply wonderful! It is important to us that you can experience the daily life of the animals. And that you can approach them when feeding or bathing. Briefly: it is a wonderful experience that you will remember for a long time. How much do you want to bet?
Elephant Sanctuary: Help and protection for homeless elephants
Thousands and thousands of elephants have been living in Thailand for many decades. In recent years, the number of these gentle animals has been greatly reduced. In 1950, there were still about 50,000 elephants, whilst today there are only 3,000 to 3,500 left. The main reason for this is the clearing of woods and forests, which often takes the lives of these fascinating animals. We are committed to the protection of elephants by offering them a safe and protected life in the elephant sanctuary. By the way, the supply of a single elephant costs several hundred dollars a month and an elephant consumes up to 200 kilograms of food a day. With our work, we do not only ensure the livelihood of the animals but also their well-being and comfort.
Enjoying elephants means collecting memories!
